[To be finished for Friday]
I attended the Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst Limited Partners Summit East conference on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 28 & 29, 2005, at The Pierre hotel in New York City. This conference is for the level of the food chain above venture capitalists. These are the guys that high and mighty venture capitalists have to grovel before to get their money. It is an interesting conference. Actually, venture capital is only a fraction of the total private equity market, but it is one of the higher profile segments. Buyouts and distressed debt are the other two main segments of the private equity market.
[TBD]
2005 is expected to be a record-breaking year for private equity fundraising, but much of that is on the buyout side rather than on the venture capital side which is only gradually recovering.
Interestingly, on the first day of the conference there were far more venture capital general partners (GPs) present than the limited partners (LPs) for whom the conference was intended. A fair number of attendees represent "fund of funds" who wear both hats, being general partners of their funds that are in turn limited partners of venture capital limited partnerships.
